The Eagles signed 8 UDFA's this year. Two of them made my compilation, which means that at least one of the six sources deemed them to be a top 100 prospect.
CB Eli Ricks was ranked 119th, which is a mid 4th round grade. Excellent pickup. Twice in the recent past, I've seen prospects rated this high fall to the Eagles in the UDFA phase. One was a huge success, one was an inexplicable failure. Last year, QB Carson Strong seemed to be a steal, but he failed miserably in camp. About four years ago or so, LB TJ Edwards was a 4th round talent who fell to the Eagles and played well for us before signing a nice deal in CHI.
CB Mekhi Garner was ranked 115th, which is a late 5th round talent. Excellent value. Hopefully between these two, Ringo, Brown, plus Edmonds, Blankenship and Williams, we can replace the two departed safeties and also strengthen a week depth chart at DB.
Before I go on, remember, everyone has the ability to sign UDFA's. I think of it like this. The draft is 7 rounds (ignoring the fact that the comp picks make it eight rounds within the seven). Everyone should have one pick is each of the "extended rounds of the UDFA signing draft. Every team signs their best guy which would be round 8, and then everyone signs their next pick, which would be round 9 etc. So technically, our eight UDFA signings, should represent one pick in rounds 8-15. We already know that our top two were excellent values, a mid 4th and a late 5th.
Here are the average rankings using the five sources who listed enough prospects to include most of these picks. Walter Football is excluded as they only ranked 130 prospects.
OT Trevor Reid - avg ranking = 284, which is a low "8th" round pick. CBS and Draftek both had him as a late 7th round pick. Good value, considering our third UDFA signing ahs "8th" round talent.
WR Jadon Haselwood = 330th, which is a high "10th" round pick. Draftek had him as an early 7th round talent. Average value. He played with Hurts in Oklahoma so that's good enough for me at this spot.
LB Ben Van Suderan = 359th, which is an early "11th" round pick. Average value. He supposedly has off the wall athletic scores, like high 9's average out of 10.0 max! Good enough for me.
WR Joseph Ngata = 369th, mid "11th". I would have like to see them add some better UDFA WR's than we did, however he's average value here.
P Ty Zentner - ranked 400th. He's a punter, what do you want from me. Don't think he's of the quality we need but maybe someone better is cut early on.
TE Brady Russell - camp fodder. signed as a favor to his Uncle who is in the Eagle's organization somewhere.
Overall, a solid if not spectacular UDFA signing period. I'd give them a B + here overall. If they get 2 roster guys and 2 practice squad guys, then it's a decent haul.
