1st round pick #30 – Nolan Smith OLB, Georgia = B+
There were four rated higher than him who were available at 30:
#13 CB J. Porter
#14 S B. Branch
#19 QB W. Levis
#20 TE M.Mayer
#26 OLB N. Smith
Porter would have been my pick; however, it is an easy argument to make that OLB-EDGE rusher was more of an immediate need.
We got the 26th rated prospect at #30 at a position of need. His rankings across the six sources varied widely (17, 18, 55, 16, 51, 22). The major doubt is if his 238 lb frame will preclude him from being an effective pass rusher in the NFL. For every Hassan Reddick there are three failures at that weight who lost to quality NFL tackles.
NFL.com has him as a prospect who will eventually develop into a plus starter. I’ll take it.
