Every year, I do a compilation from six sources that rank draft prospects. I summarize them, sort them and come up with a draft board of the prospects based on the average rankings from those six sources. The sources are NFL.com, ESPN, , CBS Sports, Pro Football Focus, Walter Football and Draftek. I thought of adding a 7th, The Athletic, but I didn't have enough time. Only one of the sites, NFL.com, does a qualitative projection that lists what type of a player they project to be (example Pro Bowl, 1st year starter, backup etc). One year's 40th highest prospect could project to a year one starter when in another year, it could be someone who is projected to possibly develop into a starter years later. Not all drafts are equal in this respect.
First things first. In my grading, a C is average. Old school. Not meant to offend anyone. I have no desire to curve an above average to an A+ that so many sites tend to do. Also, if you get a player of the same value, at the same spot, in a position of need, that would be average to above average. If you get the same but get a player ranked much higher, that would likely be excellent. You got value in that spot. This really doesn't predict the overall talent, just the talent you were able to get in the draft position you have.
A+ = outstanding
A = Excellent
B = Good
C = Average
D = Below Average
F = Poor
Also, not much of this grading is mine per se, as it is basically is based on a summary of others who spend a shitload of time researching and evaluating this stuff than any of us can. I normally specify when an opinion is mine.
That being said, I'll do a thread for each pick in case people prefer not to read about all of the picks in a really long thread.
1st round pick # 9 – Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia = A
At # 9, he was the best available. Here’s my board at that time:
#4 DT J. Carter
#6 OG P. Skoronski
#8 CB C. Gonzalez
The 4th best player at # 9, excellent pick. However, we had to give up a future 4th round pick to move up a spot. Our 4th round pick this year was CB Ringo. Do you think of this any differently if I frame it like this: Carter and give up the future 4th, or Skoronski or Gonzalez plus keep a future 4th the talent of a Ringo?
NFL.com rated him as the top player, one projected to have Pro Bowl talent. Anderson was the only other prospect rated as Pro bowl talent by them this year.
I discount it a little bit for the move up, but still this is an A grade (based on my draft compilation, which is simply a summary of others’ opinions). Now if I insert my opinion, I would have been one of the teams that took him off my board. Not because of the accident, but because he was so out of shape he couldn’t complete his Pro Day drills. The most important “interview” of his life, and he was embarrassingly unprepared. Add to that the word that leaked out from his coaches that he didn’t put the work in outside of the game time, and I can’t risk that pick on that character. With # 30, maybe, but not at 9. I will admit, that the plethora of Georgia players may help him keep in line, but put millions of dollars in his bank and he has less motivation than he had a few hours before. Motivation comes from within. I hope the kid steps up and proves my doubts unfounded.
