Every year we hear that we going to run into cap hell, we can't sign this guy or that guy, and every year after all is said and done, Howie signs a bunch of people we didn't think we could, and all is happy in Eagle land. Most years at this time, I do this same type of analysis telling folks we have a bunch of cap and we can sign almost whoever we want. I even get my free agent wish list dusted off.
Given all the dialogue about all of our free agents, and how we're not going to be able to sign the good ones, I wanted to take a look at the situation to see if Eagle fans are crying wolf again.
Well, sad to say, we do have cap problems, that unfortunately will significantly hinder us in free agency. Things have changed. Our cap situation is no where near as healthy as it used to be.
Here's a roll forward of the cap situation. Where we are, cap savings moves we can make, and what who we can do with the remaining cap. Numbers from Spotrac and Eagles Wire.
Total Salary Cap Per Team = 234.7M
Cap Value of top 51 Eagles =(171.1M)
Dead Cap $ From Past Sins = (54.7M)
Starting Cap Space Available = 8.9M (Yikes, with 18 Free Agents)
Moves to Free Up Cap Space (Painless Moves):
Extend/Restructure Lane Johnson +10.6M
Extend Kelce +2.6M
Extend Jake Elliott +2.5M
Cut Quez Watkins +2.7M
Sub Total Cap Space +27.3M
Tougher Moves To Free Cap Space:
Cut Fletcher Cox +4.0M
Cut or Trade D. Slay +4.8M
Sub Total Cap Space +36.1 M
Less 2023 Rookie Cap Pool (8.4 M)
Starting Point For Free Agents +27.7M
Signings In order of my preference: (market values for contracts from Spotrac)
J. Hargrave (A) (12.0 M) - 3 yrs, $60M, $21M SB, $40M guaranteed (similar to DT G. Jarrett)
J. Bradberry (B) ( 9.5 M ) - 3 yrs, $43.5M, $10M SB, $30 M guaranteed (similar to CB C. Davis)
B. Scott ( 1.1 M ) - 1 year
Cap Room Avail. For Hurts & Others +5.1M
Sign Hurts to Extension +2.6 M - per Eagles Wire, year 1 of new deal will be 2.2M cap vs 4.8 cap now
Cap Room Available for Other FA's +7.7 M - not much considering the low cost holes we need to fill
Free Agents we can't sign in order of concern. (AAV = Average annual Value:)
1. CJ Gardner-Johnson (C) - (AAV - 13.3M) his cap number of a new deal would approximate 8.0M in year 1. Can sign him instead of Bradberry or Hargrave if so desired, but we can only afford two of the three.
2. TJ Edwards - (AAV 11.9M)
3. M. Epps - (AAV N/A) - Blankenship is worth a flyer
4. L. Joseph or N. Suh - would like to have 1 of them but we got no $. Each made $ 2M for part year.
5. M. Sanders - (AAV 7.2M) - can't afford him. I think Gainwell + more Scott + mid round rookie draft pick is >
6. I. Seumalo - (AAV 12.0M) - Very good OG. Can't afford him. Jurgens should be able to fill in competently
7. G. Minshew - (AAV N/A) - Career Rating of 93.1 should get him a shot to compete. Will get more than we can pay
8. K. White - (AAV 8.5 M) - Average player, too much $, let the N. Dean era begin
Others free to leave - Quinn, Dillard, Pascal, T. Jackson
Here's how the details of the contracts for the top three FA's could look like. They can play with salaries among post year 1 to make it compatible with other deals. can only afford two of these three:
(A) J. Hargrave - 3 yrs, $60M, $21M SB, $40M guaranteed: - (comparable, G. Jarrett contract)
Year Sal+RB SB Cap
2023 5.0M 7.0M 12.0M
2024 14.0M 7.0M 21.0M
2025 20.0M 7.0M 27.0M
(B) J. Bradberry - 3 yrs, $43.5M, $13.5M SB, $30M guaranteed: ( comparable, C. Davis contract)
Year Sal+RB SB Cap
2023 5.0 M 4.5M 9.5M
2024 10.0M 4.5M 14.5M
2025 15.0M 4.5M 19.5M
(C) CJ Gardner Johnson - 5 yrs $65M, $15M SB,$40 M guaranteed (comparable. M. Williams contract)
Year Sal+RB SB Cap
2023 5.0M 3.0M 8.0M
2024 6.0M 3.0M 9.0M
2025 7.0M 3.0M 10.0M
2026 12.0M 3.0M 15.0M
2027 20.0M 3.0M 23.0M
Look for us to keep Hargrave + either Bradberry or CJGJ
or
Bradberry and CJGJ plus Edwards & Epps
And we need to draft our assess off to get some year one contributors in here for 2023. Haven't looked at the draft board yet, but I wouldn't mind going CB, DL, CB and RB with first four picks ( in no order)
