So after listening to one sports talk host the other night say how Nick loves us so much that he would take good backup money to stay,I decided to look up recent QB deals to see just how crazy he would have to be to do that.
Here is a list of the highest QB deals signed since 2016 to get a gauge of where Nick may fall in the pay scale.
I list Names, yr signed, yrs/total value, avg value, guaranteed at signing, and practical quarantees. Practical guarantees is more realistic than guarantees at signing.
In decreasing order of total value dollars in millions
Name.......Yr......Yrs/Value......Avg.......Guar at Sign...Practice Guar Ryan........2018.....5/150.........30.0...........94..............100 Garropolo 2018.....5/137.........27.5...........42................74 Stafford...2017......5/135.........27.0...........61................92 Rodgers...2018......4/134.........33.5...........79................99 Carr.........2017......5/125.........25.0...........40................70 Luck........2016......5/123.........24.6...........44................87 Smith......2018.......4/94..........23.5...........55................71 Cousins....2018......3/84..........28.0............84................84 Flacco......2016......3/64...........22.1...........44................44 Bortles.....2018......3/54...........18.0...........27................27 Brees.......2018......2/50...........25.0...........21................27 Keenum....2018......2/36..........18.0...........25................25 Brady.......2018......2/30...........15.0...........10................10 ======================================= Daniels.....2018.......2/10..........5.0..............7..................7 McCarron..2018.......2/10..........5.0..............5..................8
My guess?
If he goes three years, I'll go with 3yrs, $70M, 45 guar, 55 practical guarantee. If he gets four years, I'll go with 4 yrs, $100M, 60 guar, 70 practical guarantee.
In any event, the $23-$25M average dwarfs the highest backup salary average of $5M per, so people need to stop, dreaming of him staying around!

If Wentz goes down next year (history says he will), the season is completely finished. How much would you pay to ensure that the season isn't over, but in fact you have a chance to win it all?
Apparently, not enough.

Would you keep him for $20M?, and keep Wentz

No. Too great a need for cap money in other areas and it sounds like Sudfeld is ready to be #2.

Sudfeld has looked good when he has played. We may have a good backup there.

Would you keep him for $20M?, and keep Wentz Yes. No question, I think I've made my opinion clear on the matter. I also would lean towards Foles starting next season - if Wentz is the QB of the next decade for us, we should make sure he's absolutely, completely 100% before letting him back. And don't focus on the dollar sign - focus on the point here. If Wentz goes down, whenever that is, the season is completely over. Sudfeld looks good?! He threw 2 passes last year. Not to mention, if a similar injury occurs to Wentz he's one step closer to retirement. We have a bunch of FA's leaving who can free up cap space - a good draft and a couple good signings replace them. QB is the most important position in sports - invest in it.

I think Foles needs to go no matter what price we could keep him for. His presence will be a detriment for Wentz. I think you either go with one and move the other or doom both. I am not saying Foles is better or worse but I think the facts bear out that he plays well in the clutch but not so great when there is no pressure. He did not start the season on fire to be kind. If you want Wentz to be your guy then Foles can't be here anymore, especially eating up big cap room. He would always be looking over his shoulder and the fans would be screaming after every bad game.

I would argue that if Wentz is 'the guy,' then he should have the mental toughness to be able to perform without worrying about his backup. But I guess the point is moot because we all agree Foles is likely gone.

Well, at 4 yrs 88M, with 50M guaranteed, it was 3M per year less than expected. I thought he'd have a few more suitors than he did, so the amount he got was pretty good, given the lack of market.
We'll have to look at what the practical guarantees are, but that may add maybe ten mill or so.
Best of luck Nick.
You deserve all success.
Hoping he does well.

It will be an interesting year for many reasons. Absolute worst case scenario for the franchise is Wentz going down with an injury early, while Foles lights it up in Jacksonville. Best case scenario for the Eagles FO is the opposite, while I'm sure they don't wish ill on Foles. More likely both teams will struggle at times.
Either way, every single Monday is going to be two camps of Eagles fans bragging and saying "told ya so!" depending on how the Eagles/Jags do. Goddam it's going to be crazy.

Yeah, it's a shame there were so many in the Foles camp, or the Wentz camp. It almost took on the Trust the Process levels of people digging their heels in.
As a guy said on the radio the other day, why not be both a Foles AND a Wentz fan.
Here's hoping they both play very well !!

I think you had a smattering of Foles haters, mixed with people who religiously worship the fact that Wentz was the #2 pick. There were people last year on Philly radio and other 'fans' openly rooting for Foles to fail in the end to avoid a QB controversy. On the other side, you had people who recognize the simple fact that here and now, Foles gives us the best chance to win. It's pretty obvious to anyone who watched the games last year. I root for the Eagles winning without any real loyalty to a specific player, and I maintain that we should've kept both QB's this year. Time will tell, but if Wentz goes down early with another serious injury and we have to resign ourselves to a 4-12 season or some shit, it'll get ugly around here.

I'm much more optimistic on Sudfeld, and the coaching staff. I don't feel that a loss of Wentz would necessarily be the end of a meaningful, winning season. Albeit, a legitimate shot at the SB might be hovering on delusional. But I thought that too when Foles took over way back in cave-dwelling days of 2017... so.

IMO if Sudfeld ever sees the field we're either winning by 40 points in the 4th, or we're playing for a draft pick. Hey, I hope you're right and I'm wrong. Actually, I hope we never find out.
