I'm over 70. I've been an Eagles fan for longer than I can remember, and "fan" often didn't adequately describe my passion. I was an athlete and I've always loved playing most sports, but that was only a molecule in the universe compared to my obsession with all things having to do with the Eagles. And that's sadly coming near an end.
I'm not quite there yet, but I'm close to divorcing myself from major professional sports, especially all NFL football including everything having to do with the Eagles. What the league(s) and most individual teams are doing is unforgivable, they're endorsing and participating in a process that is designed to disrupt and destroy the foundation of the greatest experiment of social equality of modern human existence. Most players are either cowed into acquiescence, are allowing themselves to be used or are actively participating or leading.
In 2012 the NFL prohibited Tim Tebow from displaying anything to do with his religion. Their security forced RGIII to remove a shirt with a positive religious message. Players have been fined and reprimanded for wearing clothing and uniform items that supported causes such as breast cancer and domestic violence. The league threatened to fine players who dared to use their uniform to commemorate the terrorist attack of 9/11. The Cowboys were prevented from wearing helmet decals honoring police who were murdered in the line of duty, but the NFL will now support the very people who murdered those public servants and allow players to affix decals to their helmets in support of them.
The Star Bangled Banner is the ONLY American national anthem but the league has determined that a second anthem will be played before the first game - potentially more? Players, and maybe coaches, will kneel during the real anthem but ostensibly stand in solidarity for the faux anthem. When a player expresses a different opinion, he's told to "shut the fuck up" and is intimidated into apologizing for his support of those who gave their lives for our individual and collective freedoms.
Equality, on all levels, is the backbone of America. I believe every human is entitled to have equal opportunity and equal justice. I will never be shy in supporting that belief with my words and my actions. Never! But that's not what this manipulation of emotions and facts is about.
The organization that spearheads this social upheaval is a self-described Marxist-trained group. Their funding organization includes a convicted terrorist. When the curtain is pulled back, the group named Black Lives Matter engages in the destruction of black owned businesses; calls for and engages in the murder of police (including black police); intimidates, insults and threatens black people who disagree with them; has vowed to destroy the western nuclear family structure; and, ignores black-on-black genocide in major cities.
This is what the NFL and the Eagles are supporting. Whether it's because they are ignorant of the facts, because they are attempting to protect their income stream or for some other reason, they're actions are complicit with the attempted destruction of the social and political system that attracts immigration from the most downtrodden and abused people of the world.
At best, their actions are misguided, even if BLM were to be removed from the subject. We're told that black people suffer from systemic racism, even though uncountable black people and statistics tell a completely different story. Even though laws and social practice exist that actually provide overt favoritism to blacks. If we're to accept that black people will have different views on this, that statistics can be manipulated to present a mirage reality and that programs like Affirmative Action haven't balanced the scales of equality, why can't we have that "honest and open conversation" that will counter the facts and opinions that stand in defiance of the narrative being forced upon us? Why doesn't the NFL, MLB and the NBA devote some of their $ billions to produce open debate that will educate us all on all sides of this "issue?" Why are we being forced to not only faithfully accept the claims of injustice, but why are we forced to watch destruction, violence and injustice while we are told to "shut the fuck up?"
I'm disappointed. I'm angry. I'm sad. I'm waiting. If NFL teams present two anthems before a game, and if players kneel during THE national anthem I will never watch another Eagles game. I will divest myself of every hat, jersey, key ring and logo embossed item in my possession. I'll stop coming here to talk about the Eagles and visit with my virtual friends. Honesty, integrity and my country mean far more to me than a game, a diversion and a passion.
