Ive listened this week to some normally reasonable sports talk guys giving credence to the idea of the Eagles doing a franchise tag and trade scenario. Today, two of my favorites, Didinger and Ellis, joined in.
I must be missing something here.
I will look at it from each of the three parties involved views to see how it looks. For example, let's assume there are five teams interested in Foles' service; Jax, Mia, Cincy, Was, NYG.
First from Foles point of view. He would like to be completely free to negotiate with any team that is interested in him, and, to use each of their offers to create a fair market for his services. The fact that any of those teams possibly not being the Eagles favorite place for him to go is of little concern of his. He would like that his first choice is the highest bidder and the one that the Eagles would prefer, but unless it is, he is best for him of going to his first choice.
Next from the teams interested in Foles' perspective. The only way it benefits any of them to trade with the Eagles, is if they are blocking the others from bidding on Foles. BUT, in order for them to have a viable trade, Foles needs to do a long term deal with them, and for him to want to do that, he needs to be sure he is getting market rate. Foles is not going to want to do a long term deal for a team that isn't his first choice. AND, if Foles is willing to do a long term deal because that team is his first choice, they don't need to trade with the Eagles, they can just wait it out and get him when FA starts March 13th. The amount of players that would have to be released, or the number of deals to be redone for the cap strapped Eagles to get under the cap for the new league year March 13th is prohibitive. Even if they managed to do so, they would have to sit out days of FA because they had no cap room. Teams interested in Foles would realize real quick to wait.
Next from the Eagles perspective. They already have an after third round comp pick in 2020 if they do nothing. To improve their position, they would need to upgrade to a regular 3rd or better in 2019 or 2020. Also, this franchise tag and trade maneuver requires the cooperation of both team and player, and may be a violation even with cooperation. If st any point Nick is not happy with the way things are going, he can file a grievance and presumably get out of it. That would seem like a PR disaster, and when you add the cap machinations that need to prep for such a move, it seems like a risky waste of time.
I don't see it. Need help here. Maybe someone can give me a scenario that does not adversely effect the setting of Foles market value that benefits Foles, the Eagles and benefits the team pursuing Foles.
