while it would be impossibly time consuming to go team by team and figure out who would be available given my trade criteria, I will give examples by looking at two teams we should be familiar with; the Eagles and the Cowboys.
A reminder of my trade criteria. Teams can save one guy on the roster and we can't touch him. They then can create a list of five players, and we can't select more than one from that list. Then we can select another player not on the list of five. If for some reason, we don't want one of their top five, we select two from the other list. And we'd get the team's 3rd round pick.
If this was presented to the Eagles, and we were trading Wentz, our top guy we'd save would likely be Cox.
Then we would have a top five list of Johnson, Ertz, Jenkins, Jefferey and a Foles (we wouldn't expose our starting QB).
Everyone not on that list of five would be on the second list.
So, for Wentz and giving up our after 3rd round comp pick in 2020 we could get any of our top five plus any non top five player.
Wentz for Foles, Johnson and Kelce plus a 3rd rounder?
Wentz for Foles, Ertz and Graham plus a 3rd rounder?
And $5 million of cap room every year for five years.
Or how about the Cowboys?
I'm guessing they reserve DE Lawrence.
The next five of Vanderesch, T. Smith, J. Smith, Elliott, and Martin.
Wentz for Foles, Elliott and Cooper and a 3rd?
Wentz for Foles, Vanderesch and B. Jones and a 3rd?
And $5 million of cap room a year.
And about that $5 of cap room, what does that buy?
Based on the cap values of our players in 2018, it buys a lot. Only seven players had a cap value over $5 million. So, you can add any player in the league roughly not in the top seven on their team's payroll. That's a lot. Given the fact that our cap is strapped, most other teams will have fewer than seven over $5million, making our haul even more attractive.
Would you pass that up for the expected performance difference of Wentz over Foles?
Would you?
And, this is conservative. Reality is likely our haul would be more, if other teams value Foles and Wentz the way many do here. We could be looking at a 2nd rounder instead of a third, or a top five and two other players with no pick.
