He barely played in game one with the scrubs, took a hard hit in the chest that gave him a hairline rib fracture, so he sat out the rest of it. They were going to keep him on the bench all year until the last minute when they traded Sammy Sleeves. He won his first three starts as a rook with little preseason practice or game time, and people are worried he needs reps now? Since most teams do the same thing now, sitting star starters, September is going to be a sloppy month all over the NFL. He may need a half a game to shake the rust off, but considering his health, his experience, and the potent weapons all around him, I fully expect him to go off this year.

Hey BW, good to hear from you.
Hope all is well.
I'm old school and I think that a QB who plays some in the preseason with his group (i.e. First teasers in CWs case), is better prepared for the regular season.
The fact that everyone else does it (excluding the GOAT who put up 600 yards of offense in the SB against us) is of little consequence to me.
If other QBs are not playing, then we're missing an opportunity to improve our QB relative to others.
It's not like Wentz is an established super star who has it all figured out.
His long throws have been below average despite having the best long ball WR in the league who has been open regularly and an OL to give him time.
Last night gave us an opportunity to improve on that.
I was glad that some starters played.

With so many starters around the league sitting, including some of our best OL players, there are too many guys starting preseason games trying to just make the team. Look what happened to Suds and Kessler, I think those two injuries slammed the door on any work for Wentz before it counts. Wentz has enough experience under his belt and plenty of practice reps this year, far more than last year when he was still rehabbing. I miss the old days too, but Lehigh and West Chester will never happen again. As long as they give me a good season, how it gets started is really irrelevant anyway.

The new way of thinking appears to be that scrimmages with another team are the equivalent of a pre-season game because there is a degree of control which reduces the risk of injury.
I'm not convinced that will replicate the speed of an actual game, but it does allow both offense and defence to work on their schemes and timing.

I'm not convinced that will replicate the speed of an actual game, but it does allow both offense and defence to work on their schemes and timing. If everyone is doing it, then everyone is equal so no big deal. Players--especially QBs--are being paid so much money now, they can't risk getting them hurt in meaningless games that are more like a glorified practice. Also, with all of the science, scouting, etc. these days, there is less and less players get out of these preseason games. Players are also (overall) much better-prepared when they go to camp. Most are doing serious offseason workout/training programs. Don't need them to play in the preseason when they've already got some seasons under their belts. It's more important for kids who've not played in the NFL to get reps in the games than people like Wentz.
