For Fathers Day, I got a subscription to the Athletic which a subscription only service that has high quality articles.
one article from over a week ago was a ranking of NFL QB based on the opinions of 55 coaches and executives.
They rank them in tiers, one thru five.
Tier 1 - they carry a team each week. The team wins because of him. They are placed in the tier that the majority of the execs and coaches place them in. An average of 1.0 means that every person rated them tier one and so on.
1. Rodgers 1.04 2. Brady 1.05 3. Brees 1.07 4. Mahomes 1.13 5. Luck 1.25 6. Rivers 1.40 7. Roethlisberger 1.42 8. Wilson 1.47 ================= Tier 2 - Can carry a team sometimes, but not as consistently as tier 1 and have a hole or two in their game
9. Ryan 1.82 10. Wentz 2.20 11. Stafford 2.22 12. Watson 2.27 12. Goff 2.27 14. Mayfield 2.53 ================== Tier 3 - Legitimate starter but needs a heavier running game or defense to win 15. Newton 2.57 16. Cousins 2.71 17. Prescott 2.73 18. Foles 2.76 19. Garapolo 2.89 20. Carr 2.93 21. Flacco 2.98 22. Dalton 3.04 22. Winston 3.04 24. Manning 3.05 25. Trubitsky 3.07 26. Mariota 3.13 27. Darnold 3.15 ============== Tier 4 - unproven player with upside, or a veteran suited as a backup 28. L. Jackson 3.67 29. Allen 3.69 30. Fitzpatrick 3.78 31. Keenum 3.84 32. Rosen 3.89 =============== No starters were Tier 5
I thought the list was pretty good overall.
I may move Stafford in front of Wentz, maybe move Foles up a few, Fitz up a few, Keenum up a few.
How many tier 3 guys make the HOF? This is why Sheli don't belong.
Surprised at Tribitsky being so low and how the rose has faded for Mariota.
Anyone?

My quick takes.
A number of the Tier Two guys are early in their career, so have the opportunity to rise to be Tier One (or slip back like Mariota).
Prescott being in Tier Three is probably a reflection of that team being powered by Elliott and will make for an interesting contract negotiation. That was one of the reasons that I wanted Wentz done early - he's set the market for the likes of Prescott and Goff who are our rivals in the NFC.
As regards Manning - are the ratings based on recent or career performances?

It was based as of now, not career.
While I can't reprint the detailed explanations, it was an impressive compilation of reviews of each QB.

On current form, Manning doesn't deserve to get in.
But QBs get in very easily and he is a double SuperBowl winner so it wouldn't surprise me to see him elected. That won't be on the first ballot though.

On current form, Manning doesn't deserve to get in. Agreed. At this point he is getting votes more on memories than current performance. Prescott playing in a contract year, possibly without Zeke for a while, is going to be informative to watch. Washington is still waiting to see who wins their QB job, and with Flowers currently protecting their blind side, none of them may be in a hurry to win that one. As for Wentz, his main deal seems to be keeping him on the field. As long as you do that, you're probably gold.

So Elliot's holdout could actually work to your advantage then as it either proves Prescott is worth the money, or that he isn't. Cooper and Witten will help him in that regard.

Cooper and Witten (and Cobb for that matter) means Dak won't have the excuse of not having targets, so if Zeke doesn't show up it's gonna be on him to prove he's worth top QB money. (also, having Frederick back matters too) After finishing hot last year, he's started a little cold in camp, but is getting better. Oddly enough, if he succeeds then that could put Elliot in a weird position. The rumor is he's being offered a deal similar to the one Jets gave Bell, but if Dallas starts off strong (especially if one of the rookie backs step up) then Elliots value could shift toward what they could get for him in trade.

Mahomes had a phenomenal year last year, but the whole 'Mahomes fever' is a bit much. A couple years ago Alex Smith was putting up crazy numbers in that offense. With a Reid offense you can pretty much plug in any competent QB and win.**
**Note: this statement expires at the end of the regular season
There isn't a category for "can win every now and then, but really excels with Megatron on the field." You would have to take Stafford out of Tier 2 and put him there. Flacco and Eli have 3 rings between them, but I assume this is a 'right here and now' list.
Foles and Mariota getting no love! Thank god Nick had that defense and running attack behind him in the SB!
