Eagles sign Sproles to a one year deal.
Howard Sanders Clement Sproles Smallwood/Adams/Scott/Pumphrey
I like it.
We've kept five the last few years so I don't care if only one of the last group sticks. We could probably get a 7th rounder or a decent backup in position of need .
The thing not talked about is Clement.
He said last year that he played for quite a while with an injury, hinting it was against his doctors advice. He's not practiced at all. I think something is up with him.
Ill check into it.

Like everyone I love Sproles but that doesn't stop me being slightly concerned by this move.
It implies that no-one has stepped up as the PR alternative to Jackson, who we need to keep fresh for his main purpose of being the deep threat on offense.
Having traded for Howard and drafted Sanders high, I'd say that the roster battle is to be the third RB as Sproles hasn't been signed just to be cut in a few weeks.
I don't see the need for five RBs and we can always stash one of Adams/Scott/Pumphrey on the practice squad to be the fifth man.

I believe they're trying to do right by a great guy and great teammate who has had bad luck the past 2 seasons with injuries. Oh and, I'm sure they still believe he can help the team. Other than Howard, none of the other guys are a sure-bet to be productive at this point. You can count on Sproles to be productive (as long as he's healthy). I like the move.

I'm fine with Sproles getting 1 year deals until he hangs 'em up or is knocked into retirement. He's too explosive and talented to not give a shot to as long as he wants one.
I like Adams a lot and think he should've been the featured back last year, he certainly is worthy of the last roster spot for RB's barring a major setback.

If that was the case then we would have offered him a deal much earlier. I'd say none of the seven could be considered a sure-bet - Howard is in a new system, Sproles is another year older, Sanders is a rookie, Clement is coming off injury, neither Smallwood now Adams has done enough, and both Scott and Pumphrey are unproven. The first four are closest though.

I didn't get the impression Sproles was begging for a deal either. A RB doesn't have a hard time picking up a new system. Not like he's playing QB. He'll be more than fine. AS you pointed out, who knows with the other guys. Having an explosive veteran RB who can catch the ball out of the backfield AND return kicks is a valuable player.

I like the move a lot. He's an insurance policy, situational specialist, especially on 3rd down and 1-5 yard territory, and will be a great mentor/coach to the young Miles. There's nothing not to love about bringing him back.

Also, regarding timing, I've read the Eagles wanted him to come back from the start. Sproles was the one who was deciding whether he wanted to do another season or not. So, apparently, they wanted to re-sign him the whole time.
