I remember my first Flyers game, with a friend of mine who had been to dozens before. We all stood as Lauren Hart started singing 'God Bless America,' then the arena broke out into applause as an older woman in a grainy color video came on the big screen, and finished the song with her. My friend told me about Kate Smith and her history with the Flyers and her being a 'good luck charm,' and I passed that info along to several other people over the years who I took to their first Flyers games. I didn't know this until yesterday, but apparently the Yankees play her rendition of 'God Bless America' at home games as well. She's considered a Flyers icon, and they have a statue of her outside the Wells Fargo Center - Ed Snider (Flyers founder and owner until his death) even was a pallbearer at her funeral. However, the Brown Shirts of Tolerance never stop coming. That's right - the crack journalists of the NY Daily News uncovered the fact that she sang a few racially insensitive, satirical songs and jingles 80-something years ago. One was performed with Paul Robeson - another was part of a series of Broadway shows. Rather than tell a few offended pussies who didn't know who she was a couple days ago to grow a pair and fuck off, the Flyers organization followed the Yankees cowardly lead, and have pledged to stop playing her rendition during games. Oh, and they covered up her statue outside the arena:   Didn't Orwell write something about this? Disgraceful. |

I don't agree with everything this writer set out here, but his defense of Smith has solid ground if you ask me. Political correctness is replacing fact and reason and has become our greatest enemy. |

I'm glad you agree, but our biggest enemy is ourselves - this shit will never stop until we get in these lunatics' faces and yell at them to shut the fuck up. The problem is they're used to bullying and intimidating until they get their way. Shame on the Flyers for being complete and utter cowards here. |

You want to become the bigger bully? You want to adopt their tactics? In general, I agree with your protest over the posthumous denigration of a great American in Kate Smith. But more broadly - does it come down to who's willing to fight the dirtiest? Do we descend to our opponents' level? Can we ever win if we don't? These are difficult questions. |

Ideally the higher ground should always be the answer, but with evidence that our schools have have fallen to political indoctrination we're seeing that the higher ground is either banned or burned.

Would you proudly stand on a street corner in Philly, holding a sign that says 'there are only two genders?' No? Are you aware that universities don't allow conservatives to speak because of the violence these people will commit? Ok then. |
