Is it age, the system, or the injuries? Maybe a combination? Bradberry playing out of position, no real answer at nickel - hopefully Roby will help.

It's a combination of system, personnel, and rules changed.
The Jim Johnson defenses we loved 20 years ago are probably never coming back. First and foremost, Howie doesn't value the linebacker position. So you can't count on our LBs in coverage while showing different blitzing packages, and in fact you just can't blitz that much. I know everyone always complains about corners playing soft, but the personnel on the field also factors into that. Modern DC's as a whole simply lean that way in order to not give up "the big play."
Buddy Ryan's 46 D is long gone. It sucks, but it's reality. (It also helped having HOF'ers and multiple Pro Bowlers in our secondary back then)

The biggest, by far, factor in the old defenses not coming back is the rules.
DB’s can’t crush WR to take away the middle routes.
DLs can’t hit the QB to rush them up.
This makes the middle slants wide open.
Remember the House of Pain game when we crushed their WRs and we said “y’all gonna get your guys killed” if they keep coming in the middle.
No more.

You don't need to crush anyone to stop quick passing. Chuck them off the line. Now, if you miss, that is a problem but the hope is the line will get there before they can run their route to get open after the timing is knocked off.
